Snackr v0.38 TEST: Google Reader integration is here!
Posted by Narciso Jaramillo under Snackr16 Comments
It looks like we’ve had over 20,000 downloads of Snackr so far, which is pretty amazing to me. I suspect the number of regular users is much lower–taking a look at my server logs, it’s probably on the order of a thousand or so–but still, not bad for a little side project!
It’s been awhile since the last test build, but hopefully the new one is worth the wait–thanks to Rob Adams, Snackr v0.38 TEST has an early version of Google Reader integration! If you hook up Snackr to Google Reader, your feed list and read items will be synchronized both ways between the two.
Even if you don’t normally use Google Reader, if you use Snackr on multiple computers (e.g. home and work), it’s handy to sync all of them to Google Reader, so all your feed lists and read items stay in sync across your machines (that’s actually mostly what I use the integration for).
To set up the integration, just go to the Options popup and click on the Google Reader tab, check the checkbox, and enter your Google Reader username and password. You’ll get an option to choose whether you want to use Reader’s feed list or Snackr’s, or merge the two. Once you connect, if you have a lot of feeds in Reader, the ticker might stutter a bit as everything gets synchronized (we hope to improve this in future versions), but after a couple minutes it should clear up.
One important thing to note is that because the feed lists are synchronized, if you delete a feed in Snackr, it will be deleted in Google Reader. We’re hoping to make this optional in the future (so you can choose when deleting a feed in Snackr whether to also delete it in Reader), but for now be aware of this behavior.
Another new feature in this version is a set of helpful tools in the item popup, letting you email the item, post it to del.icio.us/digg, and more. I’m planning to make this extensible in the future, so you can add new tools from the Options popup.
As usual, because this is an early test build, there may be bugs lurking. So:
- Back up your Snackr database AND your Google Reader feed list first!
- Read the release notes
- Download the v0.38 build!
And, of course, send us feedback! You can post bugs/feature requests in the issues list, comment here, or send me email. Enjoy!

Ants, I know that you stated “Download” above. The question I have is, do you actually mean upgrade or do I need to uninstall the v0.34 and then download the v35. Also I noticed that I have v0.33 in the options tab. Yet in the preferences tab, I have a selection that says to let Snackr automatically check for updates. When will this happen for me? I have no clue. It doesn’t say. And, because the program says that it is a 33 and not a 38, can I assume that the new version will automatically show itself one day? Ha ha. You know that my newborn of two months is staring, looking continuously (my spelling is bad), at your invention with much curiosity, just like a toy. ha ha. She likes your Snackr! She was crying and then she saw the banner scrolling and she got quiet and just started watching it. I guess she thought “neato!” Take care, you busy man!
Hey NJ,
Thanks for this awesome app! Is there a way not to show the read items??
I just want you to know – I LOVE YOUR APP! Although I am also an AIR developer but I never devote on it like you did.
BTW, please take more care on memory-releasing and system-wise optimization. I always think that features won’t make an app GREAT.
=)
Any chance of syncing with Feeddemon/newsgator?
I am using this and I love it. It’s very convenient, but (of course there’s a but), it take a lot of memory. It’s crazy!
The other day, I went to sleep. I left it on for 5 hours. I checked the Real Memory in the Activity Monitor on my black Macbook and it was over 600 MB!!
Something must have happened with my computer that day, but the average is somewhere between 200 and 300 MB which is still a lot.
[…] UPDATE: There is a new version of the applicaton (v 0.38 TEST) which has an interesting feature – Google Reader integration. You connect to your google reader using your user name and password and all your Google Reader items comes in. One thing to remember. It has a two way syncing. So anything you add and delete in your Google Account gets reflected in Snackr, and vice versa. So, please watchout when you delete an item from your Snackr list. Read more and installation instructions here. […]
no updates here?
Narciso, un botón de pausa!!! Igual la herramienta funciona fantástico, en windows y en mac. Agregame a la lista de Snackr Addicts! 🙂
Yes, fans are clamoring for updates! 😉
Any chance of syncing with the Bloglines API to do the same thing?
am i the only person reporting that AiR 1.5 has broken my beloved Snackr? the ticker will run, but when you click on an item Snackr chokes and crashes. who do i send bug reports to?
@DocDre–hmmm, that’s strange–I just tried it on Mac and it seemed to work fine, though I haven’t tried it on Windows yet. Which platform are you on?
I works fine for me with AIR 1.5 and Vista and 0.38 test build.
The only issues I have are occasional crashes and insane memory use (usually over 800 megs!).
Fix those and you will have a solid app.
sorry for the late reply…i didn’t think you’d actually answer!
i’m on OS X 10.5.5 on an Intel MBP, if that helps. i ended up downgrading to AiR 1.1 and .37 and everything worked fine again.
if you need me to, i’ll go back to 1.5 and see if i can generate a crash report. do i send it to your snackr.net addy?
I have the same problem of crashing Snackr when selecting an item, too.
I’m on Mac OS X 10.5.5 Intel MB. Adobe Air 1.5.
Hmmm, I can’t reproduce the crashes. DocDre–I think you sent me crash logs at some point, but I can’t find them–could you resend? Not sure I can use them, but it can’t hurt.
Also, if you could send me URLs of feeds whose items cause Snackr to crash, that might help. I doubt the problem is feed-specific, but it can’t hurt to check. Thanks.
